Periodontal disease affects more than 80% of Americans and is a leading cause of tooth loss in adults. We understand the importance of addressing this condition promptly and offer comprehensive periodontal services to halt its progression and restore dental health.

Gum disease begins with the accumulation of plaque, a sticky substance produced by oral bacteria, which can harden into tartar and irritate gum tissue, leading to infection. The initial stage, known as gingivitis, is characterized by gum swelling, redness, and bleeding. As the disease advances, bacteria damage the connective tissues between gums and teeth, resulting in the formation of pockets of infection as gums pull away from the teeth.

During your regular dental cleanings, which we recommend every four to six months (depending on your periodontal status), our hygienists will examine the depth of your periodontal pockets to assess the severity of the disease. In some cases, a procedure called scaling and root planing may be performed to remove tartar from below the gum line and smooth the tooth roots, helping to eliminate the infection. With time, the gums can heal and reattach to the teeth. However, more extensive treatment may be necessary in certain cases.

Additionally, gummy smile (excessive display of gums) can also be addressed by a procedure called gum lift (crown lengthening) and rejuvenate your smile with a minimally invasive approach.

If you have any concerns about gum disease, gum lifts or would like to schedule an periodontal consultation with our specialist Periodontist, please contact Dental Esthetics Boston. We are here to address your questions and provide you with the necessary care to maintain optimal periodontal health.
